“ਮੇਰੇ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ ਦੇ ਪਾਤਰ ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਮਰਦ ਔਰਤਾਂ ਬੱਚੇ, ਪਸ਼ੂ ਪੰਛੀ ਹਨ ਜੋ ਪਾਤਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰੀਆਂ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਜਾਨ ਬਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਤਰਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਗਲਪ ਲੇਖਕ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਰਚਨਾਵਾਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਲਿਖਣ ਦੀ ਸੂਝ ਦਿੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।”
ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਰੋਡੇ, ਜਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਮੋਗਾ ਦਾ ਜੰਮਪਲ ਅਜਮੇਰ ਰੋਡੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ, ਦੋਵੇਂ ਜ਼ਬਾਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਖਦਾ ਹੈ। ਕਵਿਤਾ, ਨਾਟਕ, ਗਲਪ ਅਤੇ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਦੀਆਂ ਉਸਦੀਆਂ ਦੋ ਦਰਜਨ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਮਿੰਨੀ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਤ ਹੋ ਚੁੱਕੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਉਸਦੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਵਿਗਿਆਨਕ ਗਲਪ ਸ਼ੈਲੀ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਖੀ ਅਲਬਰਟ ਆਈਨਸਟਾਈਨ ਦੇ ਰੈਲਿਟਿਵਟੀ ਸਿਧਾਂਤ ‘ਤੇ ਆਧਾਰਤ ‘ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਦੀ ਨੁਹਾਰ’ ਹੈ ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਨੇ 1966 ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਤ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਉਸੇ ਸਾਲ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਇੰਜਨੀਅਰਿੰਗ ਕਾਲਜ ਲੁਧਿਆਣਾ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰੀ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਚਲਾ ਗਿਆ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਉਹਨੇ ਹੋਰ ਰਚਨਾਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਦੋ ਦਰਜਨ ਦੇ ਕਰੀਬ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ਵੀ ਲਿਖੀਆਂ। ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੁਝ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਮੈਗਜ਼ੀਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਤ ਹੋ ਚੁੱਕੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦਾ ਮੋਢੀ ਨਾਟਕਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਜਿਸਨੇ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਇਕਾਂਗੀ ‘ਦੂਜਾ ਪਾਸਾ’ ਅਤੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਨਾਟਕ ‘ਕਾਮਾਗਾਟਾਮਾਰੂ’ ਲਿਖੇ ਅਤੇ ਨਿਰਦੇਸ਼ਤ ਕੀਤੇ । ਉਸਨੇ ਦਰਜਨ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ, ਨਾਟਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਿਨੇ- ਸਕ੍ਰਿਪਟਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ।
ਉਸਦੀ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਕਾਵਿ ਰਚਨਾ ਨਵਤੇਜ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਲਿਖੀ ਗਈ 1224 ਪੰਨੇ ਦੀ ਕਾਵਿ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਲੀਲਾ ਵਿਚ ਦਰਜ ਹੈ । ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਪਾਤਰ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਵਿਚ: “ਲੀਲਾ ਵੀਹਵੀਂ ਸਦੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਣਿ ਕਾਵਿ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਇਕ ਹੈ”।
ਉਸਦੀਆਂ ਕਵਿਤਾਵਾਂ ਹਿੰਦੀ, ਯੂਨਾਨੀ, ਆਇਰਸ਼, ਇਤਾਲਵੀ ਅਤੇ ਰੁਮਾਨੀਅਨ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਹੋ ਚੁੱਕੀਆਂ ਹਨ । ਉਸਦੀ ਕਵਿਤਾ, “Stroll in a Particle” ਉਹਨਾਂ ਅੱਠ ਅੰਤਰਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਕਵਿਤਾਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਿੱਲ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਲਿੰਡਾ ਗੇਟਸ ਨੇ ਸਿਆਟਲ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਵਿਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਦਫ਼ਤਰੀ ਭਵਨ ਸਮੂਹ ਦੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਉਸਾਰੀ ਇਕ ਜਨਤਕ ਕੰਧ ਉਤੇ ਕਾਂਸੀ ਦੇ ਅੱਖਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਉਕਰਵਾਇਆ । ‘ਦਾ ਅਕੈਡਮੀ ਔਫ ਅਮੈਰਕਨ ਪੋਇਟਸ’ ਨੇ ਉਹਦੀ ਕਵਿਤਾ, “Mustard Flowers” ਅਮਰੀਕਨ ਸਕੂਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਉਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਚੁਣੀ । ਉਹਦੀ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਕਵਿਤਾ, “Kalli” ਨੂੰ “100 ਗ੍ਰੇਟ ਇੰਡੀਅਨ ਪੋਇਮਜ਼” ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਜੋ 3000 ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੀਆਂ 28 ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਖੀਆਂ ਕਵਿਤਾਵਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਇਸ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਲਈ ਚੁਣੀਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ।
ਅਜਮੇਰ ਰੋਡੇ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਮੁਖ ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਜੱਥੇਬੰਦੀ, ‘ਦਾ ਰਾਈਟਰਜ਼ ਯੂਨੀਅਨ ਔਫ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ’ ਦੀ ਨੈਸ਼ਨਲ ਕਾਉਂਸਲ ਦਾ ਮੈਂਬਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਯੂਨੀਅਨ ਦੀ ‘ਰੇਸ਼ਲ ਮਨਾਰਟੀ ਰਾਈਟਰਜ਼ ਕਮੇਟੀ’ ਦਾ ਚੇਅਰਮੈਨ । ਉਹਨੂੰ ਮਿਲਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਦਰਜਨਾਂ ਪੁਰਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਪੰਜਾਬ (1994), ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਔਫ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਕੋਲੰਬੀਆ (ਲਾਈਫ ਟਾਈਮ ਅਚੀਵਮੈਂਟ ਅਵਾਰਡ), ਪ੍ਰੋਵਿੰਸ਼ਲ ਲੈਂਗੂਏਜਜ਼ ਸਰਵਿਸ, ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਕੋਲੰਬੀਆ, ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਸ਼ਠਤ ਅਨਾਦ ਕਾਵਿ ਸੰਮਾਨ (ਦਿੱਲੀ) ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹਨ।
ਕਿੱਤੇ ਵਜੋਂ ਉਹਨੇ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਵਿਚ ਕੰਪਿਉਟਰ ਇੰਜਨੀਅਰ, ਪਲੈਨਿੰਗ ਇੰਜਨੀਅਰ ਅਤੇ ਗਲੋਬਲ ਵਾਰਮਿੰਗ ਐਕਸਪਰਟ ਵਜੋਂ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ।
AJMER RODE
Urmilla Anand Memorial Award Winner-2026
Ajmer Rode, born in the village of Rode, District Moga, Punjab, writes in both Punjabi and English. Around two dozen of his books and chapbooks—spanning poetry, drama, fiction, and translation—have been published. His very first book, Vishv Di Nuhar (“The Profile of the Universe”), was written in the genre of science fiction and based on Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. It was published by Punjabi University in 1966.
In the same year, he resigned from his professorship at Guru Nanak Engineering College, Ludhiana, and moved to Canada, where, along with other writings, he produced nearly two dozen short stories. Some of these have appeared in Punjabi literary magazines.
In Canada, he is regarded as a pioneering Punjabi playwright. He wrote and directed the first one-act play Dooja Pasa (“The Other Side”) and the full-length play Komagata Maru. He has authored more than a dozen plays and screenplays.
Much of his poetry is included in the 1,224-page poetic volume Leela, co-authored with Navtej Bharti. In the words of Surjit Patar: “Leela is one of the most significant poetry books of the twentieth century.”
His poems have been translated into Hindi, Greek, Irish, Italian, and Romanian. His poem “Stroll in a Particle” is among eight international poems that Bill and Melinda Gates had engraved in bronze letters on a public wall outside their office complex in Seattle. The Academy of American Poets selected his poem “Mustard Flowers” for teaching in American schools. His English poem “Kalli” was included in 100 Great Indian Poems, an anthology selected from poems written in 28 Indian languages over a span of 3,000 years.
Ajmer Rode has served as a member of the National Council of The Writers’ Union of Canada and as Chair of its Racial Minority Writers Committee. Among the dozens of awards,he has received are honours from the Language Department, Punjab (1994), the University of British Columbia (Lifetime Achievement Award), Provincial Language Service, British Columbia, and the prestigious Anaad Poetry Award (Delhi).
Professionally, in Canada, he has worked as a computer engineer, planning engineer, and global warming expert.
