"ਸਬਬ ਨਾਲ ਦੋ ਘਟਨਾਵਾਂ ਉਤੋੜਿਤੀ ਵਾਪਰੀਆਂ। ਮੇਰਾ ਇੱਕ ਮਿਤਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਬੜੇ ਸੁਹਣੇ ਫਲੈਟ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖ ਕੇ ਕਹਿਣ ਲੱਗਾ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਘਰ ਵਾਲਾ ਅਹਿਸਾਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ। ਤੇ ਅਗਲੇ ਹੀ ਦਿਨ ਮੇਰੀ ਇਕ ਕੁਲੀਗ ਦੀ ਗਲਬਾਤ ਤੋਂ ਜਾਪਿਆ ਕਿ ਭਰ ਜਵਾਨੀ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਘਰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਦੇ ਹੋਟਲ ਵਰਗੇ ਆਸ਼ਰਮ ਵਿਚ ਜਾਣ ਲਈ ਕਾਹਲੀ ਹੈ। ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਕ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗ ਜੋੜਾ ਚੇਤੇ ਆਇਆ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਕਲੌਤਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਵਿਦੇਸ਼ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਬਾਰੀਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਝਾਕਦਾ ਇਕਲਾਪਾ ਵੀ ਮੇਰੀਆਂ ਯਾਦਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਕਿਤੇ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਭ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਤਾਲਮੇਲ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ।"

ਬਿੰਦਰ ਬਸਰਾ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਜਲੰਧਰ ਦੇ ਚਿੱਟੀ ਵੇਈਂ ਨੇੜਲੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਜੰਡਿਆਲੀ , ਡਾਕਘਰ ਜਮਸ਼ੇਰ ਵਿਖੇ 3 ਫਰਵਰੀ 1962 ਨੂੰ ਹੋਇਆ।
ਕਹਾਣੀ ਉਸ ਨੇ 1984 ’ਚ ਲਿਖਣੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਕਹਾਣੀ ‘ਸੀਤ ਜੰਗ’ ਜਲੰਧਰ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਤ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਮਾਸਿਕ ‘ਨੀਲਮਣੀ’ ’ਚ ਛਪੀ। ਦੂਜੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਰਸਾਲੇ ‘ਸਿਰਜਣਾ’ ਵਿਚ ਛਪੀ ਅਤੇ ਫੇਰ ਉਸਦੀਆਂ ਕਹਾਣੀਆਂ ‘ਲਕੀਰ’ ’ਚ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਤ ਹੁੰਦੀਆਂ ਰਹੀਆਂ। ਏਨੇ ਲੰਮੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੋਂ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੇ ਹੋਣ ਦੇ ਬਾਵਜੂਦ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਅਜੇ ਤੀਕ ਇਕੋ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ ‘ਕਦਮ ਕਦਮ ਚੌਰਾਹੇ’ 2012 ’ਚ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
ਉਸ ਨੇ ਭਾਰਤ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਨੈਸ਼ਨਲ ਬੁੱਕ ਟਰਸਟ ਦੀਆਂ ਛੇ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਦਾ ਹਿੰਦੀ ਤੋਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ’ਚ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ। 1992 ਤੋਂ ਉਹ ਪਤਰਕਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਕਿੱਤੇ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ। 18 ਸਾਲ ਰੋਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਅੱਜ ਦੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਵਿਚ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਮਗਰੋਂ 2011 ਤੋਂ ਉਹ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਜਾਗਰਣ ਦੇ ਮੈਗਜ਼ੀਨ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਗਰਾਨ ਵਜੋਂ ਸੇਵਾਰਤ ਹੈ।

"Two things happened in quick succession. A friend of mine saw a beautiful flat and remarked that beautiful it maybe, but certainly did not feel like home. And the very next day, a fairly young colleague of mine made a comment that conveyed her desire to leave home to go and live in a rented hotel-like ashram for the elderly, instead. Suddenly, I was reminded of an elderly couple I knew, whose only son lived abroad. The loneliness spreading out of the windows of their house was also etched in my memory. It was the combination of all these things that gave birth to this story."
About the seed form of the story 'Kalh Vi Aunay'
Binder Basra was born on 3 February 1962 at Jandiali village, Jamsher near Chitti Vein rivulet in Jalandhar district. He started writing short stories in 1984 and his first story 'Seet Jang' came out in the monthly 'Neelmani' published from Jalandhar. The second one was published in the famous Punjabi magazine 'Sirjana' and then his stories continued to be published in 'Lakeer'. Despite his long association with the genre, his only collection of short stories, Kadam Kadam Chourahe, was published much later in 2012.
He has translated six books for the National Book Trust , India from Hindi to Punjabi. He has been involved in journalism since 1992. After working in daily Aaj Di Awaaz for 18 years, he has been serving as the Incharge of the magazine section of Punjabi Jagran since 2011.
